I know how much you like pitching other emulators, but running Windows 9x in VMware works pretty darn well, even with sound, file drag&drop, and high resolution graphics. The AppDefense component is not installed by default. Don't use VMware if you want to have a virtual machine of Windows 98 and/or 98 SE.You must perform a custom installation and include that component. The vShield component is not installed by default.
The steps that follow show how to install.
The detailed steps for installing VMware Tools depend on the version of Windows you are running.
If you use vSphere and plan to install the Guest Introspection Thin Agent driver, see the system requirements listed in the vShield Quick Start Guide. VMware Tools for Windows supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows, Windows XP and Windows Server guest operating systems. For operating systems later than these, you must log in as an administrator. Any user can install VMware Tools in a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME guest operating system. Log in as an administrator unless you are using an older Windows operating system. Use the virtual machine settings editor to set the CD/DVD drive to autodetect a physical drive. This ISO file looks like a physical CD to your guest operating system. The autodetect setting enables the virtual machine's first virtual CD/DVD drive to detect and connect to the VMware Tools ISO file for a VMware Tools installation. I tested a VM with Windows 98 and the mouse is ok with a VMware driver. I checked driver for the mouse and I saw that it is not a VMware driver but a Microsoft driver for mouse. For Workstation Player, Fusion, and Workstation Pro virtual machines, if you connected the virtual machine’s virtual CD/DVD drive to an ISO image file when you installed the operating system, change the setting so that the virtual CD/DVD drive is configured to autodetect a physical drive. Hi, I have installed a VM with Windows 95 OSR 2.5 with VMware Tools. In the vSphere Client inventory, select the virtual machine and click the Summary tab. For vSphere virtual machines, determine whether you have the latest version of VMware Tools. Verify that the guest operating system is running.
